The Dwell 24: Sara Simoska - Dwell

Sara Simoska looks inward for inspiration. So the pandemic was an opportunity for deep introspection: What was most important to her? Stuck at home in Skopje, North Macedonia, she realized that what she loves more than anything are books.

Inspired by the incline of volumes on a rack, Simoska created Movable Furniture, a collection of oblique wooden shelving units that glide on small wheels.

Conceived as sculptures, her Movables "aren’t 1,000 percent practical," admits Simoska. "They’re meant to exhibit the books you’re most proud of. You need a little bit of courage to have these objects in your home."

Hometown: Skopje, North Macedonia

Describe what you make in 140 characters. I am an architect who wants to experiment in different scales. One of those scales is furniture design where I have freedom of expression.

What’s the last thing you designed? An imaginative design stand for Design Week, all in red.

Do you have a daily creative ritual? Drink a smoothie in the morning, don’t open Instagram for one hour after waking up, focus on myself.

How do you procrastinate? By waking up later, like at 9 or 10 a.m. I would like to wake up earlier, but this is my guilty pleasure.

What everyday object would you like to redesign? Why? Shelves. I am obsessed with shelves, I don't know why. But I see them as small architectures.

Who are your heroes (in design, in life, in both)? My mother, father, and brother.

What skill would you most like to learn? Marketing, business, negotiations. Since I begun developing my own brand, I understood how these skills are important.

What is your most treasured possession? A chair by Gio Ponti and one chair from Rex Kralj.

What’s your earliest memory of an encounter with design? My home.

What contemporary design trend do you despise? Pink.

Finish this statement: All design should... be temporary.

What’s in your dream house? Just white, wood, and simple.

How can the design world be more inclusive? By doing furniture for public spaces and social groups.

What do you wish non-designers understood about the design industry? That it is a piece of art, and no, they cannot make it.
