From its beginnings in Troy in 1891, Sacred Heart Parish Catholic Church has been a well-known part of the Troy community.

Troy, Mo. - Life is full of wants, but there is no more base desire than food; it is the sustenance that fuels our continued existence. Lacking in food is to be lacking in life, while giving food away could be likened unto giving life to those in need. This noble cause of providing food is in detriment at Troy’s Bread for Life Food Pantry on Cap-Au-Gris street, and the pantry’s food board hopes to remedy their problem in August by hosting a food drive on the thirteenth.

Jim Zuroweste, the food board president, explained the pantry’s lack of resources while showing off food “care-packages” that the pantry gives away to each patron.

“This whole box [of food] weighs about 22 pounds,” stated Zuroweste as he withdrew a smorgasbord of items including canned goods, cereal grains, and frozen meats, breads and produce that may have outlived their in-store shelf life.

“This box used to weigh 51 pounds.”

According to the vice president of the food board, Harriet Zuroweste, “[The pantry] usually services [over 1,000] people a week; last week 126 households stopped by for food.” Due to supply shortages, that amount of service is now in jeopardy. As a result, the pantry has recently moved to serving patrons once a month, as opposed to their standard twice a month service.

“Rising food and gasoline prices are hurting families that were already food insecure,” states Zuroweste. “It is a difficult time for many throughout Lincoln County.” The increase in pantry patronage, happening both locally and nationally, only further stresses the lack of resources at the pantry.

“TFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) foods [are lacking] because of delivery issues. Suppliers say there is product on the East coast that they can’t get to the Midwest because of trucks [being] unavailable. Some of [the food] is close to the expiration date, and by the time it arrives, it can’t be distributed,” stated Harriet.

Mark Heiger, a volunteer and board member, detailed further: “Last month we got around 7,500 pounds [of food]; normally we get around 15,000 pounds.”

While the pantry once received a bounty of TFAP food from the St. Louis food bank, they also rely on donated food and purchases through monetary donations to stock their shelves and line the walls to their walk-in freezer. Local grocery stores donate products; private citizens, farmers and hunters often share their own surplus with the pantry in times of need. Toyota has donated over $30,000 to the pantry, and looks to donate another $15,000 in the near future.

“This is a very generous community,” said Harriet. “People will give in [our time of need].”

The Bread for Life Food Pantry is planning its special food drive for August 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on location at 820 Cap-Au-Gris Street, with volunteers there to help unload and stock products throughout the drive. While all foods (along with cash donations) are accepted, the pantry is in special need of canned vegetables, canned pasta, soups, Mac&Cheese, Pork’N’Beans, canned meats, canned fruits and applesauce.
